Depósitos Portuarios, SA (Deposa) terminal has completed the construction of six new agri-food and agro-energy liquid bulk storage tanks in the port of Bilbao. Each of the new tanks has the capacity to store up to 2,000 m³, which has allowed Deposa to reach a capacity of more than 32,000 m³ distributed in 34 tanks that they have in dock.

The new tanks are made of stainless steel, have been heat-insulated and are thermally insulated, all with the aim of taking care of the cargoes they will store. Likewise, the facilities have a piping system that allows products to be received and shipped directly from the pier, and a new loading dock with capacity for two tank trucks has been set up, which significantly speeds up operations.

The port of Bilbao offers for the transfer of liquid bulk, materials that represent 17.7 million tons and more than 57% of the total traffic in the Biscayan port. Although the most important are oil products, LNG, chemicals, agri-food and others are also noteworthy, which can be received and shipped by rail, ship, truck and pipeline through highly specialized terminals for each product and the nine companies that have warehouses for all industrial sectors in the north of our country and in the south of France.

Hafesa Group, a holding made up of companies dedicated to the marketing and distribution of oil products, has announced that it wants to invest some 18 million euros in improving and adapting its facilities. To this end, it will proceed to build a new hydrocarbon storage and distribution plant in the Port of Ferrol ( Spain ).

The area, which was previously used for the storage of biofuels, will now have twelve new storage tanks, in addition to the existing 36 tanks in Spain. Through this new plant, the company wants to strengthen its operations in the north of the country, where it already operates with the plants in Bilbao and Gijón, while increasing its storage capacity.

It is the fifth plant that the firm incorporates. Apart from the plants in the North, the company has built plants in Motril and Ocaña, with a total capacity of almost 500,000 m³ for the storage of hydrocarbons.
The Port of Ferrol also has a lot to gain from all these changes, since the investment will strengthen the attractiveness and logistic capabilities of the enclave, while creating new employment opportunities in the A Coruña region.

Thanks to this new operation, Hafesa Group continues to maintain its strategic commitment to the regional development of the hydrocarbons sector, as well as to the diversification of energy resources.

In addition to having a new hydrocarbon plant, it is worth mentioning that the board of directors of the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority has approved the extension of the Masol concession. Thus, the company will be able to integrate new facilities that optimize the production of the concessions it owns in the outer port and which is located in the biodiesel plant.

Decal terminal recently received the authorization to expand its facilities in the Port of Huelva, a 20 million euro project which consists of the construction of 10 new tanks and auxiliary installations to develop the handling of vegetable oils and, above all, non-hazardous waste and fats animals destined for the manufacture of eco-fuels.

With this expansion underway, the eighth since Decal Spain began its
activity in Huelva back in 1996, the current storage capacity will be expanded by about 75,200 cubic meters, distributed in 2 stainless tanks of 12,600 (10,000 tons) and 8 of 6,250 (5,000 tons), all able to maintain the necessary temperature of the products at between 40º and 60º C.
The new facilities will be perfectly integrated with the three berths that Decal operates and which give a great maritime operational capacity, in addition to the pipe connections with Lipsa’s oil refinery, Cepsa’s-La Rábida refinery and Gunvor-Biosur’s biodiesel production plant.
The start-up is scheduled for the beginning of 2023.

The need for infrastructures for the storage of raw materials for eco-fuels, obtained from waste such as used cooking oil or animal fats not intended for human consumption make Huelva’s Terminal an ideal option for the development of sustainability objectives at national level, specially since in 2020 Decal’s facilities became the first authorised Border Control Post, for the import of animal fats from third countries, used for the production of biofuels, granted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

In the period analysed between January and October 2020 in the latest update of the biofuel statistics produced by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) the main raw material consumed in Spain to produce biodiesel have been used cooking oils.
One of the highlights reveals that in this period China became the main exporter of raw material for biodiesel consumed in Spain, ahead of Indonesia, Argentina, Malaysia and Brasil.
While the South-East Asian countries export palmoils and the South Americans export soybean oils, China exports used cooking oil as raw material.

In Spain, the market depends mainly on oil from the Horeca channel: hotels, restaurants and coffee shops and the limitations and closures that affected restaurants and hotels due to the pandemic supposed a significant drop in the generation of used cooking oils in Spain forcing to look for supplies in other countries.

On the other hand, the fact that raw materials from waste count twice, when it comes to meeting the mandatory objective of incorporating biofuels in diesel and gasoline, has made used oils approach virgin soy, palm or rapeseed oils levels for the first time. In fact, used oils climbed up to first place with 36.3 percent of all raw material used to produce biodiesel.

This milestone enables the company to advance in the production of low-carbon fuels for industries such as aviation, where alternatives like electrification are not viable today. The first batch consists of 7,000 tons of aviation fuel made from biomass which passed the demanding tests required by these products. It has a bio content under 5% in order to meet the quality standards established by international specifications and using it will prevent 400 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

Petronor together with its main shareholder, REPSOL, will invest EUR 80 mill in two new facilities attached to the refinery in the Port of Bilbao that will help the decarbonisation process using new technologies to produce zero-emission synthetic fuels and generate gas as fuel for the refinery itself by using urban solid waste such as paper, cardboard, plastics and textiles.

The commissioning of the new facilities is scheduled for 2024 and Petronor will be backed by a technological collaboration agreement between Repsol and Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, also highly interested in the production of synthetic fuels while progress is being made in the decarbonization process in the world.
The first plant, with an investment of EUR 60 mill, will be one of the largest plants in the world to produce around 10.000 ltrs/day of synthetic hydrogen, using water and CO2 captured from the refinery as raw materials, while the energy needed in the process will come from Repsol’s own wind and solar generation, giving a production capacity of 50 barrels/day of synthetic fuel.

On the other hand, Petronor launched a fuel with just 0.5% sulphur content and includes this new product in its already wide offer on the international market, in accordance with the most demanding environmental standards.
By manufacturing this new type of low sulphur fuel, Petronor adapts its production to the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, which establishes that the fuel to be burned by ships would have to go from a sulphur concentration of 3.5% to 0.5%, apart from ships that have specific treatment plants to clean combustion gases. However, the use of these purification systems, known in the sector as “scrubbers”, is still very minor in maritime traffic world, therefore the manufacture of fuels with just 0.5% sulphur represents one of the most important changes in the refining sector.

The company Extracte Lur, integrated by Oleofat and other partners, acquired the biodiesel plant that Acciona had in Navarra to transform it into a biorefinery, and has signed a strategic agreement with an important oil company for the production of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and glycerine, which is already being produced since the beginning of 2019.
The project involves an investment of 2.5 million euros aimed at the adaptation of the existing facilities, which had been closed for six years due to the convulsions of the biodiesel market and the existing uncertainties about the future of automotive fuels, and their conversion into a modern biorefinery.

Antonio Brufau, president of Repsol, said that the company will perform in the coming years an EUR 300 million investment to build a second generation biofuels plant at its Cartagena refinery. The works will start in 2020 and will use used fats and oils as raw material. This investment also includes the increase in the quality and capacity of the products of the lubricants plant.
The plan is to take advantage of some old facilities that were left in disuse after the expansion of the refining plant, back in 2011, to build the new plant. It is about two old production units, whose space will be occupied as of next year by the new biofuel plant.
The expectation is to achieve an annual production of about 250,000 tons of biofuels.
