Goldman Sachs shook up the Spanish renewable energy sector announcing their new commitment to gain positions in the energy transition. The business bank has launched Verdalia Bioenergy, a new fund with 1,000 MEUR that will be used exclusively for the acquisition, development and management of biomethane assets, one of the renewable gases that aspire to become in the star substitute for natural gas.
In revealing its energy plan, Wall Street’s giant, with more than 2 billion euros in assets under management, believe that biomethane is one of the most attractive segments of the energy transition for investors.

Goldman Sachs thus positions itself on the side of biomethane as the golden vector for decarbonization, compared to other alternatives, such as green hydrogen, which are apparently arousing greater interest among investors.
Biomethane is a renewable gas that is obtained from biological waste, such as slurry, manure, agricultural residues or sewage sludge.

Spain, due to its high agricultural and livestock activity, is already a kind of European landfill, so it has the potential to become the backbone of the biomethane chain on the continent.

It is no coincidence that Goldman Sachs has launched Verdalia’s activity in Spain, with the acquisition of its first portfolio of projects under development with the potential to produce 150 GWh/year.

Spain has more than 2,300 plants that can be transformed to generate biomethane, a process that would entail an investment of almost 40,500 MEUR, according to a recent report. Europe has set a production target for this clean fuel of 35,000 million cubic meters per year (bcm/year) by 2030.
12 and 13% will be provided by Spain The path towards the expansion of biomethane seems to be clearer than the path towards the deployment of renewable hydrogen, something that is already beginning to be discussed in the gossip of the financial world, where the word ‘bubble’ comes up every time more often when talking about this second green gas.

Although the European Commission has announced that it will launch the first auction for purchases of hydrogen worth 800 million next autumn, the plan generates suspicions. The reason is that the regulatory framework that will define what can be considered renewable
hydrogen based on its origin (nuclear, photovoltaic, gas, wind…), as well as the criteria for its certification, is still up in the air and this lack of definition is causing a transfer of hydrogen investment to the US.

Naturgy and the Norwegian Equinor have gone a step further in their alliance in offshore wind power with the signing of an agreement with the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster to promote and develop future offshore projects on the islands.

Specifically, the two energy companies are promoters of the Floating Offshore Wind Canarias (Fowca) project, a floating offshore wind farm of about 200 megawatts (MW) to the East of Gran Canaria, in which they are working to qualify for the auction scheduled for this year.

Naturgy and Equinor, together with the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster, will identify and carry out joint initiatives to promote the supply chain of the Canary Islands, through its integration into a sustainable development of marine renewable energies, including the promotion of the Fowca offshore wind project.

This offshore wind farm will be developed with semi-submersible floating platform technology which, among other advantages, allows the installation of structures farthest from the coast..

Decal terminal recently received the authorization to expand its facilities in the Port of Huelva, a 20 million euro project which consists of the construction of 10 new tanks and auxiliary installations to develop the handling of vegetable oils and, above all, non-hazardous waste and fats animals destined for the manufacture of eco-fuels.

With this expansion underway, the eighth since Decal Spain began its
activity in Huelva back in 1996, the current storage capacity will be expanded by about 75,200 cubic meters, distributed in 2 stainless tanks of 12,600 (10,000 tons) and 8 of 6,250 (5,000 tons), all able to maintain the necessary temperature of the products at between 40º and 60º C.
The new facilities will be perfectly integrated with the three berths that Decal operates and which give a great maritime operational capacity, in addition to the pipe connections with Lipsa’s oil refinery, Cepsa’s-La Rábida refinery and Gunvor-Biosur’s biodiesel production plant.
The start-up is scheduled for the beginning of 2023.

The need for infrastructures for the storage of raw materials for eco-fuels, obtained from waste such as used cooking oil or animal fats not intended for human consumption make Huelva’s Terminal an ideal option for the development of sustainability objectives at national level, specially since in 2020 Decal’s facilities became the first authorised Border Control Post, for the import of animal fats from third countries, used for the production of biofuels, granted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Also Endesa plans to build 23 hydrogen plants in Spain of which Navantia and Windar will participate in the construction of the floating platforms that will make up the offshore wind farm. The green hydrogen produced will be consumed locally, distributed through the gas network and also exported to Europe.

The project will have a first deployment on a demonstrative scale, with a power of 50 MW of offshore wind and 100 MW of land, a 5 MW offshore electrolyzer and a 100 MW onshore. In a second phase, the project could be expanded to 250 MW of offshore wind, with an additional 100 MW onshore electrolyzer.

To produce these advanced materials, the company will adapt one of the units of its Tarragona Industrial Complex, with a total cost of EUR 32 M.

It is a highly specialized product, which provides great added value in markets such as
the automotive, both for its greater lightness and, mainly, for its extraordinary resistance to impact Thanks to these characteristics, this type of polymers are used as a raw material for the manufacture of bumpers and different elements of vehicles that require special firmness, such as door panels and instruments.
This project strengthens Repsol’s role as a key supplier to the automotive sector and a company committed to the environment, within the framework of its goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050.
To manufacture this new range of polymers the company will install a second reactor in one of the polypropylene production units of the chemical area of the largest petrochemical complex in Spain.

On the other hand, Repsol’s refinery in La Coruña continues with the construction of the new unit for obtaining polymer-grade propylene, which, according to the multinational, will improve the competitiveness and efficiency of the industrial complex.
The objective of this new unit, which represents an investment of EUR 29 M for the company, is to increase propylene production by 35% at the A Coruña refinery and revalue it by increasing its quality. When the investment is completed, calculated for the first quarter of 2021, the refinery will reach an estimated annual production of 81,000 tons of polymer grade propylene. This material is used in the chemical industry as a raw material for the production of polypropylene, which in turn serves as the basis for manufacturing a wide variety of products of daily life, such as medical supplies, stationery, textile industry or packaging.
Repsol emphasizes that this project is an example of their commitment to the future and competitiveness of the Coruña refinery. In addition, they point out that this investment must be added to the maintenance work this year, which cost EUR 64 M.

Another project that Repsol announced to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Spain is the construction of an advanced biofuels plant which will produce 250,000 tons of hydrobiodiesel, biojet, bionaphtha and biopropane per year at the Cartagena factory.
The new plant, which will be operational in 2023 will produce these biofuels for the combustion of airplanes, trucks, and cars from recycled raw materials. It will allow reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 900,000 tons per year.
Repsol’s objective is to double the production of high-quality biofuels from vegetable oils, up to 600,000 tons by 2030, of which 50% will be produced with waste. The new facility will involve an investment close to s 200 million euros (specifically 188 million) and will include the launch of a hydrogen plant, which will feed hydrotreating unit, equipped with the latest technology.
