Repsol expects to have the first plant in the Iberian Peninsula for the manufacture of high-impact polymers by next year.
To produce these advanced materials, the company will adapt one of the units of its Tarragona Industrial Complex, with a total cost of EUR 32 M.

It is a highly specialized product, which provides great added value in markets such as
the automotive, both for its greater lightness and, mainly, for its extraordinary resistance to impact Thanks to these characteristics, this type of polymers are used as a raw material for the manufacture of bumpers and different elements of vehicles that require special firmness, such as door panels and instruments.
This project strengthens Repsol’s role as a key supplier to the automotive sector and a company committed to the environment, within the framework of its goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050.
To manufacture this new range of polymers the company will install a second reactor in one of the polypropylene production units of the chemical area of the largest petrochemical complex in Spain.

On the other hand, Repsol’s refinery in La Coruña continues with the construction of the new unit for obtaining polymer-grade propylene, which, according to the multinational, will improve the competitiveness and efficiency of the industrial complex.
The objective of this new unit, which represents an investment of EUR 29 M for the company, is to increase propylene production by 35% at the A Coruña refinery and revalue it by increasing its quality. When the investment is completed, calculated for the first quarter of 2021, the refinery will reach an estimated annual production of 81,000 tons of polymer grade propylene. This material is used in the chemical industry as a raw material for the production of polypropylene, which in turn serves as the basis for manufacturing a wide variety of products of daily life, such as medical supplies, stationery, textile industry or packaging.
Repsol emphasizes that this project is an example of their commitment to the future and competitiveness of the Coruña refinery. In addition, they point out that this investment must be added to the maintenance work this year, which cost EUR 64 M.

Another project that Repsol announced to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Spain is the construction of an advanced biofuels plant which will produce 250,000 tons of hydrobiodiesel, biojet, bionaphtha and biopropane per year at the Cartagena factory.
The new plant, which will be operational in 2023 will produce these biofuels for the combustion of airplanes, trucks, and cars from recycled raw materials. It will allow reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 900,000 tons per year.
Repsol’s objective is to double the production of high-quality biofuels from vegetable oils, up to 600,000 tons by 2030, of which 50% will be produced with waste. The new facility will involve an investment close to s 200 million euros (specifically 188 million) and will include the launch of a hydrogen plant, which will feed hydrotreating unit, equipped with the latest technology.

Spain’s Repsol suspended its swaps of refining products for crude with Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA as U.S. officials weighed penalties for foreign firms doing business with Venezuela.

The Spanish oil company has been swapping fuel and waiving payments due from a joint venture with PDVSA in exchange for crude, even as the United States rolled out new sanctions aimed at ousting Venezuela’s socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

The arrangement made Repsol one of the OPEC-member nation’s main fuel suppliers, alongside Russia’s Rosneft and India’s Reliance Industries.

A final decision on whether Repsol will cancel the Venezuelan swap deal altogether, after it was first arranged in late 2018, has not yet been made,

Repsol’s most recent shipment of gasoline arrived in Venezuela on March 25 aboard the Torm Laura, while the Achilleas, a Suezmax tanker remained anchored off Venezuela’s Jose oil port, after loading about 1 million barrels of heavy crude.

Another group of 11 loaded tankers, chartered by U.S. firms Chevron Corp, Valero Energy and Citgo Petroleum have been anchored off Jose for over two months following payment complications from sanctions.

In February, Spain imported some 75,920 barrels per day (bpd) of Venezuelan oil, down from 84,650 bpd the month before, when arrivals were boosted by the Repsol-PDVSA swap. The European country imported an average of 12,630 bpd of the crude during 2018.

Located on an anticline island of the Persian Gulf, with a strategic geographical location and privileged orographic conditions, Khark’s terminal has managed to reach the level of exports it had 10 years ago.

This recovery in exports has allowed Khark’s nine docks to become operational for the first time after 20 years.

Khark makes 90% of Iran’s crude exports, which since the entry into force of the nuclear deal in January 2016 have gone from 1 million barrels per day (bpd) to almost 2.3 million bpd last month, with a daily average of 3 or 4 ships, while production will soon reach 4 million.

France, Spain, Greece, Italy, China, India, Turkey and Japan are some of the direct buyers or those who transfer Iranian crude oil to other countries.

The features of the terminal and its privileged conditions distinguish it from other places worldwide.

One of them is the altitude difference of 60 or 70 meters from the sea surface to the tanks which eliminates the need for a pump or any amplifier to supply the oil to ships improving the operation’s efficiency.

In addition, the island is formed of makatea, which reduces the high costs of dredging, and is located only 1,100 meters away from mainland.

The terminal has two key springs, with a total capacity from 8 to 10 million bpd, although the current record of cargo is 6.6 million.

The “T” wharf, the largest in Iran, consists of six docks, equipped with measuring machines with a capacity of 13,500 barrels of oil per hour.

The other main wharf, called “C island”, has three docks with a 30 meters draught, able to dock the largest ships of 300,000 metric tons (equivalent to 2 million Barrels of crude oil).

Some of these shipments have been acquired last year by Anglo-Dutch Shell, France’s Total, Spain’s Cepsa or Italy’s Eni, as part of Iran’s goal of boosting exports to Europe up to the 800,000 bpd in the next months.

Although during the sanctions the terminal operated at low rate, which production was mainly destined for Asia, the terminal was never abandoned.

Pipelines, tanks and docks, which had not been checked in the previous 60 years, were reviewed, allowing Khark to resurface as the main connection between the market Iranian oil tanker and the world’s economy.

Iran’s goal is to increase crude oil exports to Europe to 800,000 barrels per day (bpd) over the next two months, the Iranian oil ministry informed.

Deputy Oil Minister Ali Kardar explained to the official IRNA agency that at present the export to Europe is something more than 500,000 bpd.

The average of Iranian oil exports worldwide last February was 2,298,000 bpd, while production will reach 4 million bpd next month.

Kardar said Anglo-Dutch oil companies Shell and France’s Total bought two shipments of 2 million barrels each since the lifting of international sanctions in January 2016.

Meanwhile, Italian Eni also bought a cargo of 2 million barrels, according to the deputy minister, who also indicated that oil was exported to Spain, although he did not specify the quantity.

Following the entry into force of the nuclear agreement between Iran and six major powers in January 2016 and the consequent lifting of sanctions, Iranian oil buyers have diversified.

At the time of the sanctions, production was 2.7 million bpd, of which one million were exported, but this sale was limited to China, South Korea, Japan, India and Turkey.

Kardar also reported that Iran has already received technical studies on several deposits from companies such as Total, Russia’s Lukoil, Japan’s Inpex and Germany’s Wintershall.

In early January, Iran announced that a total of 29 international companies, including Spain’s CEPSA, will be able to bid for new oil and gas projects in Iran.

The Iranian authorities are also finalizing the new Iran Oil Contract (CPI), a legal instrument designed to attract multimillion-dollar investments in the sector.

Repsol and partner Armstrong Energy have made in Alaska the largest U.S. onshore conventional hydrocarbons discovery in 30 years. The Horseshoe-1 and 1A wells drilled during the 2016-2017 winter campaign confirm the Nanushuk play as a significant emerging play in Alaska’s North Slope.

The contingent resources identified with the existing data in Repsol and Armstrong Energy’s blocks in the Nanushuk play in Alaska could amount to approximately 1.2 billion barrels of recoverable light oil.

The Horseshoe wells extend by 20 miles (32 kilometers) a play already uncovered in previous campaigns in an area known as Pikka.

Preliminary development concepts for Pikka anticipate first production there from 2021, with a potential rate approaching 120,000 barrels of oil per day.

Repsol has been actively exploring Alaska since 2008, and since 2011 the company has drilled multiple consecutive discoveries on the North Slope along with partner Armstrong

The Spanish Government remains firmly committed to find and extract oil and gas in the Spanish territory.

And so it is stated in the National Security Energy Strategy report recently issued by Prime Minister, and develops the provisions adopted by the 2013 National Security Strategy report.

This report warns about the external dependency on oil consumption and advocates “promoting research and exploitation of oil fields and designing of feasibility plans for the extraction of these resources in the territory in environmentally appropriate conditions “.

The data handled by the Strategic Reserves Corporation, known by the acronym of Cores, show that Spain imported oil 99.5% and 99.8% of gas consumed in 2015. Against this background, there are only 40 existing permits granted by the State Administration for exploration in Spanish territory, both gas and oil, according to figures collected by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Among the companies that have that authorization, Repsol leads the list, through its subsidiary Ripsa survey, which has granted 19 licenses. Followed by the public company Hidrocarburos de Euskadi (SHESA) under the Basque Energy Board and the Basque Government, with 12 permits.

By other side, since 2014, several companies began to decline their commitments with the Public Administration for the extraction of oil and gas. This been told, it is worthy to point out that the ways to request the approval of a survey project are different, but also are different the criteria of the Administration to authorize them. Both, the State and the autonomous communities, have legitimacy for granting permits, which delays the formalities.

The Heritage Petroleum company applied for a license to research on Matallana de Torio and Guardo fields and is waiting for more than 10 years for an answer.
