Covestro will invest 200 million in a new chlorine plant in Tarragona

Covestro announced that will invest 200 million euros in a new chlorine production plant in La Canonja, formalizing its commitment to the industrial complex of Tarragona, which will increase its production capacity of MDI plastics.

Covestro will maintain the production of its plant in Tarragona (Spain) beyond the year 2020, increasing the competitiveness of the factory by implementing various measures . As a first step, it plans to build its own chlorine production plant, thus ensuring a highly efficient, sustainable and independent supply of this crucial raw material.

Covestro will also increase the capacity of its local MDI plant by 50,000 tons to reach approximately 220,000 tons per year.

The increase in production will progressively occur until 2022, while the start of chlorine production is expected by the end of 2020. Until then the supply will still be external. For the new production of chlorine, Covestro intends to use the most advanced technology in energy efficiency, in this way the manufacture of this key raw material and, consequently also the production in general, will be more efficient.

This investment takes further advantage of the company’s existing global production network and reinforces its commitment to the MDI. Covestro is already doubling its capacity at the German plant in Brunsbuettel (Germany) to produce up to 400,000 tonnes of MDI annually by the end of 2018.
