TARRAGONA – COVESTRO WILL SHUT DOWN THE MDI PLANT IN 2017

By the end of 2017, Covestro (Bayer) will shut down MDI production at Tarragona due to uncompetitive costs and high energy price according to them.

Another factor influencing the plant closure is the chloride supply.
The annual production capacity is 170.000 tons.
This closure adds to Celanese’s shut down of one of its two plants at Tarragona, although IQOXE –former IQA- reached an agreement with the American company to buy it, while their PVA plant will decrease its activity progressively by next year.
