Enagás and BP Oil España have signed an agreement under which Scale Gas, Enagás’ subsidiary, will develop points of sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) in the network of BP service stations in Spain.
In addition to the promotion of infrastructure for LNG and CNG in the field of sustainable transport, the agreement also aims to support the production and encouragement of the consumption of renewable gases, and the promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation projects.
BP will acquire the biomethane produced by Enagás’ company, Bioengas, and will also collaborate in the creation of a national market for the purchase and sale of this product and in the identification of new consumption opportunities.
BP’s strategic objective is to supply biomethane from its LNG and compressed gas plants, as well as the possibility its refinery in Castellón being supplied through biogas, biomethane or hydrogen plants derived from biogas projects, in line with the strategy towards eco-friendly fuels.

Enagas’ six operating regasification plants in Spain will operate to the maximum of their possibilities until at least September, which guarantees a cheap gas supply for consumers, because the company has already contracted 90% of the available slots, while the remaining 10 % will be auctioned monthly. Only a certain reserve will be kept to cover system needs. The Technical Manager of the Gas System (GTS) held an auction last February in which hired 118 slots (times and services for the discharge of liquefied natural gas from methane tankers), after receiving almost 300 requests, practically three times more of what had been offered. In Spain there are 250 slots available for hire per year.

Almería adds itself to the list of ports which supply LNG to the ferries operating in port.
The LNG supply will be carried out by trucks, in an estimated time of 60 minutes and taking all the existing security measures. With this new service, in addition to contributing to the sustainability of the port, Almería Port Authority will be able to catch the attention of shipping companies who have LNG fueled ferries. So far, Balearia company -which operates between the port of Almería and the ports of Melilla and Nador- have already requested bunkering for its vessels.

MIBGAS launched the trading of liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot products in a single point or virtual tank where all the transactions, that until now were carried out individually in each of the six Spanish regasification plants, will be grouped. This
measure greatly benefits traders by increasing their trading possibilities (in fact, the first transaction was performed in the opening session), providing a balancing platform for LNG as well. It also contributes to put in value the regasification infrastructure existing in Spain with plants in Barcelona, Sagunto, Cartagena, Huelva, Mugardos and Bilbao.
From now on, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks of each of the Spanish regasification plants join in a single virtual tank, so that the LNG owners do not know the physical location of their LNG.
The implementation of the TVB (Tanque Virtual de Balance in Spanish) is one of the changes included in the new regulation of the Spanish gas system that has been approved this year by the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC).
The implementation and launch of this new trading products in a single virtual point (TVB) from the previous system with the six Spanish regasification plants have been carried out in cooperation with Enagás GTS, the TSO of the Spanish gas system.

Barcelona Port Authority (APB) has granted Shell España, SA a provisional license for one year to provide the LNG service in the ship-to-ship mode in the Catalan port.
Shell has been conducting operations to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to cruise ships in the ports of Barcelona and Tenerife and one of the pioneer companies in the supply of LNG to ships of various kinds: container ships, ferries , tankers or cruise ships, among others. These operations will be carried out with the supply vessels “Cardissa” (last generation built in 2017) and “Coral Methane” (2009) with a capacity of around 6,500 m3 and 7,500 m2 respectively.

Barcelona concentrates 60% of ship-to-ship LNG bunkering
The port of Barcelona carried out a total of 18 STS LNG bunkering operations, which represent the 60% of this kind of operations carried out in Spain, being 37,200 m3 of LNG from the 81,704 m3 which were supplied in all the Spanish ports. Besides those 18 STS, 5 truck-to-ship supplies, totalling 400 m3, have to be added. According to this, Barcelona counted almost the half (46%) of LNG supplies in Spain last year.
Most of the supplies were performed to cruise ships which regularly call Barcelona, which has become the main hub in the Mediterranean being fully equipped with all the required facilities to supply LNG.

Endesa and Flex LNG shipping company have reached a charter agreement for the Flex Ranger methane carrier for one year with the possibility of extending it to another. The vessel will be used for the transport of liquefied natural gas from June 2020. This is the third methane carrier that the Spanish company will have chartered. With this fleet, Endesa will transport the two billion annual cubic meters purchased in 2014 within the Cheniere Energy project, from the port of Corpus Christi (Texas, USA).
The vessel was built in 2018 and has 293m LOA , 45m beam and a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of LNG in its four cryogenic tanks. It will transport gas for consumption equivalent to the demand of one day in Spain.
The Flex Ranger is one of the 13 latest generation ships, six are operational and seven are under construction, by the Norwegian shipping company.
The ship also has two-stroke dual engines and a state-of-the-art containment system that allows to reduce consumption and choose the fuel, which can be 100% natural gas or low sulphur fuel oil. It also has systems to reduce NOx emissions.
So far Endesa has agreements with the Knutsen shipping company (seven-year charter agreement, with two seven-year and six-year extension periods for the Adriano Knutsen ship) and the GasLog shipping company, for the transport of LNG with the Gaslow Warsaw from 2021 (eight-year charter agreement, with two optional periods of six years each).
In Spain there is a need to buy gas in other markets as it does not have its own reserves. Gas pipelines are not enough to meet the demand and are completed with supply through methane carriers. As a result of the decarbonization process of the economy, the demand for natural gas for electricity production is expected to increase, making the electrical system more robust to allow the progressive insertion of renewable energies, and advancing towards a zero-emission scenario in 2050.
